Chinese Pottery, Modern Technology vs The Human Eye
So who is better at detecting fake Chinese pottery and Chinese porcelain? Does modern technology do a better job than the experts human eye?

Thermoluminescence
Thermoluminescence has been used by museums and auction house to certify pieces for over 20 years. The process involves taking a very tiny sample of the object radiation level are measured in the sample to determine how long ago the Chinese pottery was kiln fired. The biggest problem with thermoluminescence is that the best fakes do not use new material but instead take old dated pottery or clay and alter it. Fake Chinese pottery also try and put a out coating of this old clay or put it in places were hopefully the thermoluminescence sample will be taken. The test is more effective on Chinese porcelain because it is much harder to alter porcelain and rework it without it being very visible to the human eye.

X-Ray
Taking X-rays of Chinese pottery can be done in combination with thermoluminescence to help determine if a piece has been altered or reworked. The X-ray can strip away the layers that are concealed and expose a fake. The use of X-rays is not widely done however. Most will have a expert examine a piece instead.

Chinese Pottery Experts
Its important to note that faking Chinese pottery and Chinese porcelain is not new its been done for over a thousand years. Experts in Chinese pottery are good at determining fakes from looking at shape, color, glaze texture, and weight. He can use his judgment to see if all these characteristics match up with the time period the piece is suppose to be from. The expert has the experience of having held thousands of real pieces in his hand something the counterfeiter has not had. Some methods of making new pieces appear old include soaking the object in chemicals or animal urine. Intentional cracking is also done to make a piece of Chinese pottery appear old. Ash is temporarily put in the cracks to age it.

Very valuable works require both modern technology and a experts eye to guarantee authenticity.

1. You contact the seller to ask a question and the seller offers to sell it to you offline at a lower price. This is against ebay terms and reputable sellers don’t do this. If a seller is not going to live up to ebays written terms do you really think he will live up to yours.

2. Seller does not offer or guarantee authenticity (no return policy) or has expensive non refundable shipping costs. Top quality sellers stand behind their products and charge realistic shipping and handling costs. Many scammers will charge more than the item is worth for shipping to discourage returns.

3. Seller is from China, unfortunately almost everything from China is fake. If your buying because you like the item from a decorative stand point feel free to buy from China as there are many bargains but don’t pay a premium for something that is suppose to be antique. You have to understand they have factories pumping out these forgeries. Go with dealers from the US/Canada

4. Are the sellers pictures real? Have they sold the same item over and over using the same pick to sell this supposedly rare item. Check the sellers feedback and closed auctions to see if this really is a one of a kind item.

5. Seller will not take paypal. Many sellers who are selling fakes worry about charge backs and only want certified funds or money orders.

6. Ask the seller questions. Don’t assume things, if the seller is to lazy to respond to your question now what kind of a response do you think you will get after the sale. Top sellers love questions because it saves them trouble after the sale.

7. This is one of my favorites, many sellers of fakes will send a dirty item and even go so far as to include a handful of dirt with your item. I guess this is to make you believe it was freshly excavated from some ancient tomb. A legitimate seller will make sure your item is properly packed and sent safely minus the dirt.

8. Look at the sellers feedback not just his score make sure you check recent activity by the seller. Don’t rely only on feedback as many buyers do not leave negative feedback.

9. Don’t put to much stock in the sellers story, make sure you are not paying extra or relying on the item being authentic because the buyer says its from a estate sale. Ebay is about getting bargains and there are many bargains to be found on ebay. You can get items for literally pennies on the dollar so don’t get stuck on one item.

10. Get a second opinion right when you get the item. It never hurts to have another opinion even if you can tell ivory from bone.

Don’t be scared get shopping on ebay for dragon art and asian art there are to many bargains and reasons not to.
